Protecting Your Heart (and Your Wallet): Romance Scams & Fraud Awareness

February is the month of love — but unfortunately, it’s also one of the biggest months for romance scams.

At Security Bank USA, protecting our customers isn’t just part of our job — it’s personal. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, and romance schemes are one of the fastest-growing types of fraud nationwide. The good news? Knowing what to look for can make all the difference.

What Is a Romance Scam?

A romance scam happens when someone creates a fake online identity to build a relationship with you — often through social media or dating apps — with the goal of eventually asking for money.

They’re skilled at what they do. These scams aren’t rushed. They build trust over weeks or months before asking for financial help.

Common Red Flags

Watch for these warning signs:

  • They say they live or work far away (often overseas or in the military).
  • They quickly profess strong feelings or talk about a future together.
  • They always have an excuse for why they can’t meet in person or video chat.
  • They ask for money for emergencies, travel, medical bills, or “investment opportunities.”
  • They request gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.

If someone you’ve never met in person asks for money — that’s your biggest red flag.

Why Do They Ask for Specific Payment Types?

Scammers prefer methods that are hard to trace or reverse:

  • Gift cards
  • Wire transfers
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Person-to-person payment apps

Once the money is sent, it’s almost always impossible to recover.

What To Do If Something Feels Off

Trust your instincts. If something feels suspicious:

  1. Pause. Do not send money.
  2. Talk to someone you trust.
  3. Contact us immediately.

We can help review transactions, place safeguards on your account, and guide you through next steps. There is no embarrassment in asking for help — these scams are designed to manipulate emotions.

We’re Here to Protect You

At Security Bank USA, we know our customers — and that relationship matters. If you ever feel unsure about a request for money, please call us before you send it.

Love should never cost you your savings.
