After the Storm - A Step-by-Step Guide to Recovery

Storm Recovery in Bemidji

When the Storm Passes: A Step-by-Step Guide to Recovery

When a storm hits hard and causes damage to your home or business, it can feel both overwhelming and devastating. At Security Bank USA we want you to know that you’re not alone. We’re more than your bank — we’re your friends and neighbors too! We’re here to walk beside you as you take the next steps toward recovery.

Here’s a helpful guide to get you started:

Step 1: Stay Safe First

  • Check for immediate danger. Only return to your property when it is safe. Be aware of downed power lines, gas leaks, broken glass, and unstable structures.
  • Call emergency services if you or someone nearby is hurt or if your property is still hazardous.

Step 2: Document the Damage Thoroughly

  • Take clear photos and videos of all damage — inside and outside — before you start any clean-up or repairs.
  • Make notes of what was damaged and approximate values, if you know them.
  • This documentation will be essential for your insurance claim and financial records.

Step 3: Prevent Further Damage

  • Make temporary repairs to prevent additional losses. For example:
    • Tarp the roof if it’s leaking.
    • Board up broken windows or doors.
    • Remove standing water if possible.
  • Save your receipts for any materials or services used during this stage — these may be reimbursed by your insurance.

Step 4: Contact Your Insurance Company

  • Report the damage as soon as you can. Most insurance companies have 24/7 hotlines or online reporting.
  • Ask what is covered and what documentation they need.
  • Request a copy of their property loss worksheet if they don’t provide one automatically.

Step 5: Meet with Your Adjuster

  • An insurance adjuster will likely visit to assess the damage.
  • Be present if possible to answer questions and walk them through your damage.
  • Provide copies of your documentation and receipts.

Step 6: Review Your Claim & Insurance Check

  • Once the claim is processed, your insurance company will issue a check. If you have a mortgage or business loan, the check may be made out to both you and the bank.
  • When you receive an insurance claim payment with Security Bank as a payee, you will need to provide the following to the Bank to be signed:
    • Photo ID
    • Insurance Check
    • Property Loss Worksheet / Adjustor’s Worksheet.
    • Some restrictions to release funds may apply.

Step 7: Use a Property Loss Worksheet

  • Use your insurer’s worksheet or one we can provide to track repairs, estimates, expenses, and payments.
  • This helps stay organized, especially if you’re managing multiple repairs over time.

Step 8: Get Repair Estimates

  • Work with licensed and insured contractors.
  • Get at least two estimates for significant repairs.
  • Ask about timelines and payment terms.
  • Be cautious of storm chasers or unlicensed contractors. There are people out there who might try to scam you. Only work with reputable companies!

Step 9: Begin Repairs & Keep Records

  • Once repairs begin, continue to take photos of progress.
  • Keep copies of all invoices, receipts, permits, and contractor agreements.
  • If your loan requires inspections or draw requests, our team can coordinate those with you and your contractor.

Step 10: Reach Out for Help If You Need It

  • Our loan officers are here to answer questions about your mortgage, loan disbursements, or financial flexibility if you’re facing hardships.
  • We may also be able to refer you to local assistance programs or housing resources.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask. We want to help.
